A permanent public artwork designed in collaboration with artist Felicity Hammond, commissioned by Eastleigh Borough council as a new community gathering space at the centre of Hatch Farm.
The artwork draws on the history of the local barrows, and uses the motif of the maypole to reflect the cosmological view of the universe as a world tree: the axis that connects the the terrestrial to the transcendental realms of the universe.
The seating in the artwork is shaped to the outlines of plant life gathered by local school and community groups, whilst their palettes mirror the vast night sky. These fractal geometries reveal the connections that occur in the natural world between the macro and microscopic: Under the Eye of the Light is intended as a space for the community to gather and reflect on their connection to these unified planes of existence.
